Breaking the Texting Barrier: How to Communicate Clearly with a Possible Match

Breaking the Texting Barrier: How to Communicate Clearly with a Possible Match

Texting/Chatting: The Most Dangerous Form of Communication?

Texting/ Chatting can be tricky. It often doesn’t convey the full expression or state of mind, leading to misunderstandings. The human mind tends to interpret messages based on personal biases, especially when under pressure to respond quickly—like when trying to impress a potential match.

So, which one describes you most times?

(a) I usually read a text a few times, fully comprehend it, and then respond with what I believe is the best reply for the situation.

(b) I usually read the text a few times, try to comprehend it, but if I don’t understand the essence, I ask for clarity before replying.

(c) I usually read the text in a hurry and respond quickly.

(d) I usually read the text, and if it’s unclear, I ask if we can call to better understand the communication (this requires for you to take out time).

When chatting or texting with a stranger or otherwise, expecting others to fully comprehend and understand you might be asking for too much since neither person truly knows the other or they could be in a different frame of mind than you.

If the texts or chats are misunderstood, we often label the other person as a poor communicator, leading to overthinking and potential miscommunication.

Example of Overthinking:

"They don’t understand my basic chats—how will they ever understand me?"

Versus a more thoughtful approach:

"Have I tried to convey my thoughts in a way they would understand, or have I only communicated from my own perspective? Should I suggest a call to better explain what I’ve shared?"

Texting comes easy, but a call requires effort. If you’re serious about finding someone, remember that nothing worthwhile comes easy.

Make the effort, and you’ll find someone who’s worth it.
